For many generations this part of Kent was famous for growing hops.
This is a picture of a template that was used to mark the pockets, or bags, that the dried and pressed hops were stored in.
The template dates to the 1870's. Edward Tassell was my Great Great Grandfather. He lived and farmed at Knowle Hill, Ulcombe. We still farm at Knowle Hill. Note how Ulcombe was spelt in those days.
Although we no longer grow hops our neighbour is a leader in the field of growing hops on low wire work.
A legacy of our hop growing days is that two of our apple orchards are called House Hop Garden and Top Hop Garden.
